Want to get your website to the top of Google in 2 minutes? You’ve come to the right place! A few easy steps:
- Open your favorite search engine
- Type your business name
- Press “enter/return” on your keyboard
- Voila! – your business should be #1
Congratulations! You’ve achieved what many business owners desire! Unfortunately, this process isn’t very useful. Sure, you want your business to show up in the coveted number 1 spot of Google or Bing’s search listings. But you really want to rank number 1 for a keyword that is relevant to your product or service.
What are relevant keywords?
Let’s pretend you own “Bob’s Auto Body Repair Shop.” Chad hit one of Michigan’s notorious potholes and now he needs to find a place to get his car fixed. It’s highly unlikely that Chad will actually type the specific name of your business, “Bob’s Auto Repair Shop,” when he searches on Google. In fact, depending on how long you’ve been in business, Chad may not know your company even exists. In reality, Chad would probably simply type “Detroit car repair shop” or “Detroit auto body repair” into a search. THAT’S where you want your website to appear. That’s the true goal. Chad needs a repair shop NOW. Is your business in a digital position to help him? That’s where positioning your website properly on Google (and other search engines) come into play.
What’s the best keyword for my business?
Think about your business for a moment. If a customer wanted to obtain your services, what would they type into a search engine? In digital marketing we call that the keyword. You want to put yourself in the shoes of the customer here. In our example above, as owners of Bob’s Auto Body Repair Shop, we’ve determined our keywords are “Detroit car repair shop” and “Detroit auto body repair” because these are a couple of the phrases a potential customer would type to search for a solution to their problem. Now apply this to your particular business and industry.
Test your keyword against your existing website
Now, type your company’s keyword into your favorite search engine. Do you see your website on the first page? If not, look on page 2. Are you there? No? What about page 3? No? How about page 4? 5? Understand that search users are unlikely to search for services past the first two pages of search result pages. So if you’re on page 7, guess what? You’re leaving money on the table.
